When Anxiety Gets Louder in the Spring

Understanding the Seasonal Spike
Many people expect anxiety to peak during the holidays. But for many, it actually gets louder in March. The days get longer. Schedules fill up. There is talk of fresh starts and renewed energy.
And instead of feeling motivated, you may feel:
• Restless
• Overstimulated
• Behind
• On edge for no clear reason
If that is you, nothing is wrong. There is a reason for this shift.
Seasonal Change Affects the Nervous System
More daylight impacts sleep cycles.Increased activity raises stimulation levels. More social plans mean more decisions. Anxiety is not just thoughts. It is a body state.
When your nervous system senses more input or demand, it can move into alert mode. Even if nothing is technically “wrong.”
High Functioning Anxiety Can Hide
In the spring, anxiety often looks like productivity:
• Overcommitting
• Trouble resting
• Irritation or impatience
• Difficulty sleeping
From the outside, it can look like motivation. On the inside, it can feel like pressure.
Anxiety is often an attempt to stay ahead of something that feels uncertain.
But there is no finish line.
Regulation, Not More Effort
When anxiety increases, the answer is rarely to try harder.
It is usually to downshift the nervous system.
That might look like:
• Reducing unnecessary commitments
• Building in small quiet moments
• Limiting overstimulation
• Slowing your breathing before bed
These are not small things. They are signals of safety to your body.
And anxiety softens in the presence of safety.
A Different Question for March
Instead of asking, “What should I be doing?” try asking:
“What is my body asking for?”
Anxiety often gets louder when we override ourselves. Listening is not a weakness. It is awareness. If March feels more activating than inspiring, you are not regressing. You may simply need more support during a season of transition.
At Mariposa Healing Center, we approach anxiety with curiosity and compassion, helping you understand what your nervous system is communicating rather than trying to silence it.
And that shift can change everything.
